Sited on a previously-disturbed building pad on a boulder-strewn hillside, this new residence and studio space takes advantage of views in three directions, orienting its main axis to unique rock formations in the distance. The structure’s monumental concrete walls serve as a platform for the lightweight steel, glass, and wood living spaces they support. The walls also edit out the views of the busy street below, framing the mountains on the horizon and drawing the eye to the pristine desert vegetation on the hill above.
Board-formed concrete and exposed steel hint at the rugged mining traditions in the area. Over time, these materials are expected to blend into colors compatible with the natural rocks surrounding the structure.
